What is “Coaching”?

Professional/Personal coaching is on the rise across the globe. Many books have been written about coaching, seminars delivered and classes taught. Today, coaches are helping clients realize new heights in their relationships, their careers and in all facets of their lives.

Personal and Professional Coaching has been time tested in some of the biggest companies in the world. Boeing, Marriott Hotels, IBM and many others have internal coaching programs for their executives.  Companies like these invest in coaching because it works. But coaching is more than just attaining more at work. It’s about attaining everything you want in life!

What do you think of when you hear the word, "Coaching"? Most people think of sports teams and big personalities like Lou Holtz, Hank Stram, Whitey Herzog or Bill Parcels. The role of these coaches is to bring the best out of their teams on game day. They do it through knowledge of the game, preparation, repetition, etc.

Personal and professional coaching includes some facets of sports coaching, like bringing out the best in the client on game day - every day!  But this type of coaching coaching is about the client and coach creating an alliance that allows the client total freedom and flexibility to imagine their life or career in its perfect state. The coaching relationship is one of trust, honesty, accountability, and, above all else, it is a place where the client's vision for his or her life is held in the highest regard.

Coaching is not therapy - although it is routinely therapeutic. Coaching is not counseling - although the coach often helps a client get "unstuck" and moving in the right direction for that client's life goals. Coaching is not mentoring - although having a coach involved in your career can bring results much faster as you have a trusted personal advisor working with you on setting and attaining goals.

Coaching is helping the client find and set dreams, objectives, goals, wants, desires and needs - then turning those into realities.

After all, what good are dreams if they remain dreams? What good are goals if they are left unachieved? Why have desires if you’re not working towards their realization?

Coaching, the way it is performed through Kansas City Transitions Group, works with the whole person. Only in the last 15 - 20 years has the coaching profession taken hold and begun to spread across the United States. Accomplished authors Timothy Gallwey ("The Inner Game" series), the trio of Laura Whitworth, Henry Kimsey-House, and Phil Sandahl (Co-Active Coaching), along with John Whitmore (Coaching for Performance) and others have studied, written and perfected the art of personal coaching. Their findings, ideas and thoughts are the basis of the life coaching program as delivered by Kansas City Transitions Group.
